During their study of ancient Egypt, sixth graders got a first-hand
look at what it was like to create a mummy - but not a real one-of
course! Actually, they "mummified" an eggplant. Here's their
procedure...
- The first step in mummifying a
body was cleansing. To "cleanse" the bodies, students peeled
the skin of the eggplant.
- The Egyptians removed all of
the organs, except the heart and the kidneys; students just
took out some parts of the eggplant!
- Canopic jars were made for the
mummified "organs."
- Students prepared gifts for
the Ka (spirit).
- The eggplant was provided with
food, weapons, furniture, and clothing for the afterlife.
- Finally, a mask was placed
over the mummified "eggplant" body.
